Understanding Free Radical Damage

Many of us have heard of Free Radical Damage, but do not understand what it is.

So what exactly is Free Radical Damage? How does it happen? Can it be reversed or repaired, and how do we prevent it?

What is Free Radical Damage?

Free Radicals are wild oxygen molecules that attack the skin cells creating an unstable environment for your skin. This in turn causes dryness, dehydration, redness and impairing the barrier of your skin.

Imagine this, each skin cell has 2 arms and 2 legs. One of the arms has broken. The skin cell is then not functioning properly. Therefore, it searches for another arm and steals that arm from an oxygen molecule in the skin setting off a negative chain reaction creating more broken arms in the skin cells.

Free Radical Damage description

With this damage, the cell membrane is compromised. Having a strong cell membrane is vitally important to skin health to prevent the skin conditions mentioned above.

Free Radical Damage is largely caused by environmental and lifestyle factors including UV Exposure, smoking, alcohol, inflammation due to sickness, trauma and stress.

Repairing Free Radical Damage

Antioxidants are definitely the hero when repairing compromised and sun damaged skin.

WHY are antioxidants so imperative?
Antioxidants will repair the “broken cell arms” and allow the electrons to work in synergy with each other. This will enable the skin to function properly.

How can we prevent Free Radical Damage?

Have you ever asked yourself why your skin looks better in the morning than at night? As you sleep, your skin cells are rebuilt, regenerated and repaired and in the morning your skin looks refreshed. Now we know that “beauty sleep” is not just a myth!

Come night time your skin has been exposed to free radical damage and may not look as good as it did when you woke up.

First and foremost, Sun Protection is essential, as well as a daily application of an antioxidant serum.

Try using a sunscreen that contains antioxidants, eg:

For those whose skin is comprised and needs repairing whether it be rosacea, pigmentation or sun damage I recommend these products:

When using your Antioxidant, you should start to see a difference after 1-2 months.

So remember, PREVENT, PROTECT and SLOW DOWN the ageing process, do not accelerate it!
