6 Common Men's Skincare Mistakes and How to Correct Them

Did you know that there are some common skincare mistakes that men make? As a skincare coach, I have some simple techniques and daily adjustments that can be game changers when men present with concerns like oily skin, red areas of the face, shaving rash, dry skin, and blackheads.

6 Common Skincare Mistakes

  1. Using hot water on the skin daily.
  2. Using a traditional bar of soap to cleanse the face.
  3. Shaving with shaving foam on the skin.
  4. Applying After-shave directly on the face.
  5. Shaving against the grain.
  6. Not using sunscreen daily.

Before I head over to the solutions, I just thought I would let you know that my first job in the beauty industry was working for a French Barber who had a skincare salon for men in Baker Street, London. It is where my hands-on experience of doing many men's skincare treatments started.

Now I work with many male clients ranging from teenagers to adults. I love educating, and let's face it, many men are a bit oblivious about a good and simple skincare routine.

Easy Skin Solutions

  1. Use lukewarm water on the face to prevent the skin's barrier from becoming impaired.

  2. Many shaving foams contain skin irritants such as perfume and sulphates. Use a soap-free gentle face wash (cleanser) instead. Cleanse the skin first (ditch the soap bar, facial washes are the best alternative). Lather the wash on hands, massage into shaving areas, and shave away.

  3. Shave towards the grain to prevent ingrown hair and shaving rash. When you drag a razor against the natural direction of the hair, you effectively pull it back on itself, causing irritation.

  4. Aftershaves contain alcohol and perfume, two known skin irritants that can disrupt the skin barrier and cause inflammation. This reaction is amplified after shaving because shaving naturally exfoliates the skin and increases the penetration of aftershave. It's no surprise that it has a ZING sensation.
