Ten Years of Time Out Beauty

Hi, Time Out Beauties, it's Marisa here, and I'd like to share with you the journey of TOB.

As you may know, I have been a little obsessed and fascinated by the beauty industry. This obsession dates back to when I was ten years old. My first memories of beauty treatments, was watching my mother get her legs waxed and seeing a theatrical makeup artist do the makeup for my school play. I was lucky enough to know my career path from such an early age. My dream came true when I was accepted into the London College of Fashion to pursue a three-year diploma in hair, makeup, and beauty therapy.

I started working in a men's skincare salon for a renowned French barber in Baker St, London. While working on men's skin, I learned about their concerns such as irritation from shaving or in-grown hairs. My goal was to find out the best way to resolve these issues as I gained hands-on experience and grew my knowledge of the nuances between men and women's skin. This uncovered my true passion for treating skin conditions for all.

I was then very blessed to work for one of the largest hair and beauty companies in the UK, with one of the best education systems designed to refine skills. This truly enhanced my techniques and accelerated my qualifications as an advanced therapist. I continued to work for a few more salons before making the leap towards a solo journey.

Feeling confident with the advanced qualifications I had gained, I opened a treatment room in a prestigious London hair salon. Here I realised how much I valued the independence of working for myself and having complete freedom to select skincare brands and treatments that aligned with my core values and create unique solutions by combining products that matched each of my clients' skin needs.
 
Due to love, I moved to Sydney, Australia. You aussies have very different skin needs than the UK clients. Therefore to provide my aussie clients with the best skin solutions, I updated my skills to customise my treatments and solutions to treat pigmentation and help reduce environmentally damaged skin and reverse accelerated ageing. This added to my already refined skillset for treating all skin types and I opened up a clinic in the eastern suburbs of Sydney.

Time Out Beauty was founded in 2011 because I felt compelled to provide skin solutions not only to my local clients but to all of Australia, especially those in rural areas where clinical products are difficult to obtain. I wanted to be my client's virtual therapist at home, giving them access to an advanced skincare technician qualified to diagnose the skin and select the right brand and correct products for their skin concerns.

The decision to go online was a turning point in my career, and my husband Daniel, excited to take the business to its next level, joined forces with me to bring Time Out Beauty's vision online. As a software developer, he designed and built our eCommerce website. We never envisioned how quickly our philosophy would resonate with our clients around Australia, and as we started to grow, Daniel soon joined me as a director and now heads up our operations. 

In the ten years, I have seen the advancement of cosmeceutical formulations, which is so wonderful as I can now offer the best products on the market. As gut health awareness strengthened, I liaised with nutritionists who helped educate me on the connection between gut, health and lifestyle. Thus we expanded our product ranges to include a selection of inner health products to offer a holistic approach to skin solutions. It is also very satisfying to see the development and awareness of sustainability and eco-friendly packaging. To think we used to wrap products in the traditional bubble wrap. Today, we use as little plastic as possible and make sure our packaging is recyclable. I aim to reduce waste and have implemented internal strategies to reuse and recycle. 

Due to my passion for sharing my knowledge and making it accessible to my clients, I prioritise producing informative content that educates my clients on how to best care for their skin and gain skin confidence with a 360-degree approach.

Finally, I am extremely thankful for my amazing, dedicated team, who contribute to the best customer experience you deserve. I love working with my clients, whether in the treatment room or by virtual consultation. These times are the best part of my working day.
