Skin that is not exfoliated on a weekly basis can appear dry, dull and clogged.
I can always tell when a client has not exfoliated due to the roughness of the skin that can be felt during the cleansing process. Exfoliation is important, however, some take it to the extreme and over exfoliate which creates a reactive and red skin.
Why exfoliate at all?
Exfoliating will remove excess dead skin cells to:
Brighten the skin
Allow for skincare products to penetrate and deliver properly rather than being trapped on the surface of the skin.
Prevent our skin from becoming congested and help to reduce blackheads.
During professional skin treatments, a therapist will perform an exfoliation to ensure the skin receives maximum benefits from the treatment.
Types of Exfoliators
There are 3 types of Exfoliators:
Mechanical exfoliators also known as scrubs which are used to loosen and reduce skin flakes that lie on the top layer of the skin.
Enzyme exfoliators which generally contain Pineapple (Bromelain) and/or Papaya (Papain) enzymes to gently dissolve excess skin while delivering antioxidants and softening the skin without too much friction. This only works on the top layer of the skin.
Chemical exfoliators which work deeper into the skin with the use of Hydroxy Acids such as Lactic, BHA’s and Retinol(Vitamin A). These can be very beneficial for those needing corrective treatment.
Which Exfoliator will suit your skin type?
Dull, Devitalised and Sun-damaged Skin
An exfoliating serum combined with a Retinol(Vitamin A) is highly recommended for night use. By combining a Vitamin A and chemical exfoliant you will benefit from dissolving the dead skin and increase the cell renewal process which will help rejuvenate your skin. Products suitable for this are:
This skin type benefits from serums that containg both AHA’s and BHA’s. BHA’s are particularly good as they absorb excess oil in the skin and when combined with an AHA the pair work together to hydrate, reduce oiliness, exfoliate and refine clogged pores.
We love Synergie Reveal that can be used from 3 times a week gradually progressing to daily use.
Acneic skin should avoid using a mechanical scrub. It is important to focus on reducing inflammation while gently exfoliating the skin. These products are not necessarily solely exfoliation products. They are formulations used to exfoliate and reduce inflammation which is vital for this skin type. Products include:
Rosacea would definitely benefit from an Enzyme masks used weekly such as Aspect Gold Fruit Enzyme Mask. Synergie have also developed an enzyme base serum, Synergie Luciderm, that is gently enough to use everyday even for the most sensitive skin.
Please beware sun protection is a must when using an exfoliating product in the morning.
Key points to remember:
choose the right exfoliator for your skin type
exfoliate at least once on a weekly basis
remember not to over exfoliate
There is an exfoliator for everyone. Follow the points above and you will be on the right track for a brighter, refined and glowing skin.
