Vitamin AThis Spring, kick start the cell renewal process in your skin with a Vitamin A Serum, also known as "Retinol"

If you’re not using a Vitamin A serum you may be experiencing dull, sluggish skin.  You may be wondering how a Vitamin A serum can benefit you.

As most of us know the skin cell renewal process tends to slow down as we age. Vitamin A tricks our skin into thinking it’s young again.  It does this by making the skin work hard and increasing the cell turnover.  It also reduces cell inflammation and slows down the cells that are too active in reproducing,. This seems to be an occurrence in acne skin.  So to put it simply the, Vitamin A serum regulates the cell turnover, whether the cell renewal process needs to be slowed down or sped up.

By using a Vitamin A serum you will help your skin combat sun damage, as it helps the skin to preserve its collagen which is normally broken down by UV light.

Retinol is able to stimulate collagen, therefore you will notice a reduction in fine lines.

Retinol is excellent for acne sufferers as it decreases the size of the oil gland which is generally overactive. This will then reduce the amount of oil being produced in the skin.

Retinol will help to reduce the amount of pigment that is stimulated by reducing the amount of the enzyme Tyrosinase that is secreted to produce melanin. As the cell turnover is increasing it also stops pigment being trapped in the epidermis, therefore it is being removed efficiently.

So now you can see using a retinol is very beneficial to the skin. However, some retinols can cause too much sensitivity in the skin.  Currently many skincare companies have formulated retinol in such a way which creates more stability in the skin.  Many people have moved from using the traditional retinols that are prescribed by doctors to a gentler formulation in cosmeceutical skin ranges and still getting great results.

You need to be aware that when using a Retinol serum:

  • All retinol serums must be used at night.
  • Secondly, please be aware all retinol serums must be introduced to the skin gradually to prevent sensitivity and redness. Start using them every third night for ten days, then alternate nights for one week progressing into nightly use.
  • Thirdly it is not recommended to use a Retinol serum if you are pregnant or breast feeding.

There are some creams on the market which say they are a Vitamin A moisturiser especially those sold in chemists, departments stores etc.  These are more likely to contain "Retinol Palmitate" which is still a form of retinol but is an anti-oxidant and will not change the structure of the skin but may help fight against free radical damage.  It is not active like the retinol serums that are generally prescribedby your skin/beauty therapist or doctor. So if you are about to purchase a Vitamin A cream over the counter, check the ingredients to see if it lists Retinol Palmitate or Retinol and this will determine whether it is a true Retinol Molecular product or an anti-oxidant.
